The WC 2026 North & Central America group stage Matchday 1 (June 12–18) has concluded across all 12 groups, featuring all 48 teams. This article presents an "overall ranking" of all 48 teams sorted by points and goal difference as of the end of Matchday 1. It also clearly explains FIFA's tiebreaker rules — the priority order used to determine standings when teams are level on points.

Germany topped the overall standings after crushing Curaçao 7-1 (goal difference +6), followed by Sweden (+4), then Norway and the United States (+3). Meanwhile, title contenders Brazil, Portugal, and Spain were dealt an early blow by opening with draws.

On the individual front, Argentina's Messi leads the scoring charts outright after a hat-trick in a single match. Mbappé, Haaland, and Kane are among the national aces chasing him with 2 goals each. At team level, Portugal led the field in both pass accuracy and possession — yet couldn't seal the win — highlighting a stark gap between performance and results.

The slow starts by the tournament favourites stand out. Brazil (25th), Portugal (30th), and Spain (32nd) all drew their opening match. Even FIFA's No. 1-ranked Argentina, despite winning 3-0, finished 5th due to a lower goals-scored tally.

info How Are Standings Determined? FIFA Tiebreaker Rules Fully Explained

When teams within a group are level on points, rankings are decided by comparing the following criteria from top to bottom (WC 2026 format):

  • (1) Points — Total points across all matches, first and foremost.
  • (2) Points in head-to-head matches between tied teams — ★ A key feature of WC 2026. The head-to-head record between the tied teams themselves is now checked before overall goal difference.
  • (3) Goal difference in head-to-head matches between tied teams
  • (4) Goals scored in head-to-head matches between tied teams
  • (5) Overall goal difference
  • (6) Overall goals scored
  • (7) Fair Play Points — Based on the number of warnings and dismissals. Teams with fewer cards rank higher.
  • (8) Latest FIFA Ranking

In short, the priority order is: Points → (if level) Head-to-head → Overall goal difference → Goals scored → Fair Play → FIFA Ranking. Up through the 2022 tournament, overall goal difference took precedence over head-to-head results, but the biggest change for WC 2026 is that head-to-head comes first.

Fair Play Points Calculation (deductions per card)

  • Yellow card … -1
  • Second yellow / indirect red … -3
  • Direct red card … -4
  • Yellow + direct red … -5

Teams with fewer total deductions (= fewer cards) rank higher.

Comparing Third-Placed Teams (a new element in the 48-team tournament)

At WC 2026, the top 8 third-placed teams from all 12 groups advance to the knockout stage. Because there are no head-to-head matches between third-placed teams from different groups, they are ranked in order of Points → Goal Difference → Goals Scored → Fair Play Points → FIFA Ranking. The overall ranking in this article also uses this cross-group basis to rank all 48 teams.

Examples where tiebreakers applied in Matchday 1

  • Norway and the United States were completely level on 3 points, +3 goal difference, and 4 goals scored, but Norway's zero yellow cards gave them the Fair Play edge to finish 3rd (the US, with 1 yellow card, placed 4th).
  • Among teams that drew, Japan — zero yellow cards and FIFA-ranked 18th — claimed 16th place, the highest of all teams with 1 draw. Netherlands, FIFA-ranked 8th, was dragged down to 19th by 3 yellow cards.
  • Spain (32nd) and Cabo Verde (33rd), who both drew 0-0, were separated by the final criterion of FIFA Ranking (Spain 2nd / Cabo Verde 68th).

Messi leads outright after a single-match hat-trick. Each nation's ace joined the 2-goal cluster below him. With many players scoring just once, it was a classic opening matchday where goals were spread across the board.

menu_book Bookings & Dismissals (Cards Summary)

Across all 48 Matchday 1 fixtures (24 matches), a total of 52 yellow cards and 3 red cards were shown. The most heated match was the opening fixture Mexico 2-0 South Africa, which produced all 3 red cards on its own (South Africa 2, Mexico 1).

A low card count feeds directly into the Fair Play Points described above, and can decide standings when teams are level on points and goal difference. From Matchday 2 onward, discipline will be an important factor in making it through the group stage.

star WINNER Betting Odds vs. This Site's Championship Prediction Ranking

We compare the payout odds of the sports lottery "WINNER" (whose predictions have closed) — which reflect popularity — with the championship prediction ranking from user votes on this site.

6— (odds not disclosed)England (6.4%)
7— (odds not disclosed)Japan (5.1%)
8Japan (×9.7)Germany (3.8%)

Is there a gap? — Conclusion: The faces at the top are the same, but the order differs significantly.

  • In common: France, Spain, and Portugal feature in the top tier on both lists. France in particular — WINNER's No. 1 and this site's No. 2 — is rated highly by both, a consensus boosted by their impressive 3-1 opening win.
  • The biggest divergence is Portugal and Brazil. Portugal sits comfortably 1st and Brazil 3rd on this site, but in WINNER's odds Portugal is 3rd and Brazil doesn't make the top 3 at all. This directly reflects the difference between "fan passion expressed one vote at a time" and "betting-style odds where money concentrates on objectively perceived favourites."
  • Spain is WINNER's No. 2 yet only 4th on this site — their 0-0 opening draw may have dented fan sentiment.
  • Japan is the 8th most popular pick on WINNER (×9.7) and 7th on this site too, making them virtually equal. The 2-2 draw against the Netherlands appears to have given both ratings a nudge.

※ WINNER payout multipliers are as of 10:00 on 17 June 2026 and are subject to change based on ticket sales (a lower multiplier = more popular = considered a safer pick). Multipliers for the 4th through 7th favourites have not been disclosed. This site's vote shares reflect totals at the time of writing and may change as voting continues.
