A deep dive into Osako Keisuke (age 26, from Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture), who wears the No. 1 jersey at Sanfrecce Hiroshima. The 'calm-minded goalkeeper,' who earned the 2024 J1 Best Eleven and the E-1 Championship 2025 Best GK award (the first Japanese player to do so since Kusazaki in 2003), prepares for his first appearance at a World Cup finals.

Keisuke Osako, 26 years old. After inheriting the No. 1 jersey at Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 2024 and playing the full 90 minutes in every match that season, he earned his first J1 Best Eleven selection. At the EAFF E-1 Championship in July 2025, a string of superb saves against South Korea earned him the Tournament's Best Goalkeeper award — the first Japanese player to receive the honor since Masatake Kusazaki in 2003. With WC 2026 now roughly two months away, this article takes stock of the expectations and challenges facing the 188 cm goalkeeper whom our predicted 26-man squad lists as the "second domestic GK."

arrow_forward His Hometown

Enai, Takaonocho, Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture is a tranquil rural area facing the Yatsushiro Sea, situated in the northern part of the Izumi Plain — famous as a wintering ground for cranes. Growing up amid this rich natural environment, Osako attended Izumi Municipal Enai Elementary School and Enai Junior High School, and built his footballing foundations with the local "Enai Soccer Sports Youth Club" and "Felicidade FC."

Born the second of three brothers, he was drawn into football in first grade at the invitation of his older brother and quickly became absorbed in the game — a precocious boy who devised his own GK training routines. The time and space to think that his natural surroundings afforded him became the origin of his "composure" and "situational awareness" that define him today. Even as a professional, he cherishes his roots: at the local coming-of-age ceremony he cheered on the next generation with the words "Let's put Izumi City on the map together," and his bond with Kagoshima and Izumi remains as strong as ever. His performances at the World Cup finals will become a source of pride for the city of Izumi.

local_fire_department 2025/26 Season — Cementing His Place as Undisputed No. 1

Since inheriting the No. 1 jersey in 2024, Osako has continued to build an impressive record as Sanfrecce Hiroshima's undisputed first-choice GK. In the 2024 season he played the full 90 minutes in all 42 official matches and earned his first J1 Best Eleven selection. In 2025 he maintained a high workload with 38 league appearances.

Hiroshima's GK coach praised him, saying "Keisuke's greatest strength is his ability to stay composed in any situation," and his style as a sweeper-keeper modelled on Neuer is now firmly established.

sports_soccer International Career — E-1 Best Goalkeeper and the Battle for a WC 2026 Spot with Schmidt and Suzuki

Osako made his senior international debut on 18 June 2019 against Chile (Copa América). He has since accumulated 11 caps, keeping a clean sheet in 2 of those matches.

He was part of the squad as a reserve GK at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics but did not play, was not selected for the 2022 Qatar World Cup (which featured Gonda, Schmidt and Kawashima), and withdrew from the 2024 Asian Cup through injury shortly before the tournament — meaning a lack of competitive experience at major finals remained his outstanding weakness.

Then came the EAFF E-1 Championship in July 2025. With Japan claiming back-to-back titles, Osako produced a string of superb saves late in the 1–0 win over South Korea, earning the Tournament's Best Goalkeeper award — the first Japanese player to do so since Masatake Kusazaki in 2003.

The reason our predicted squad places him as the "second domestic GK" is the confidence that he would be an immediate solution if anything were to happen to first-choice GK Zion Suzuki, combined with performances a cut above any other home-based goalkeeper.

star Osako in a Phrase — "Composed Goalkeeper" and "188 cm of Wide Defensive Range" in One

Two keywords are essential to understanding Osako.

KeywordHow It Shows in His Play
Composed GoalkeeperA mental fortitude that never wavers regardless of the situation (per Hiroshima GK coach) / Clean sheet in a penalty shootout on his debut / String of superb saves late in the E-1 match against South Korea
188 cm of Wide Defensive RangeSweeper-keeper style modelled on Neuer / Reliable handling of high crosses and long balls / Endurance to play every match at full fitness

The significance of combining both qualities is clear — they are the key to repelling the aerial strikers and set pieces of the European sides in Group F.

favorite Expectations at WC 2026 — The Key to Japan Breaking Out of Group F

Japan are in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Sweden and Tunisia. From Osako, the expectation is "insurance as the second GK, and an immediate option should Zion Suzuki be unavailable."

OpponentKey Attacking CharacteristicsExpected Role for Osako
NetherlandsTechnical attackers such as Depay, Xavi Simons and GakpoHandle crosses and clearances, coordinate with the screen defenders at the same level as Suzuki
SwedenPhysical two-striker partnership of Isak and Gyökeres188 cm defensive range and E-1 award-winning set-piece handling
TunisiaOrganised set-piece playCommand high crosses and long balls; also contribute as a launch point for build-up play

live_tv Social Media & Media Presence

Osako's communication style is cool and sincere. His Instagram @keisuke.osako open_in_new has around 46,000 followers, and he updates it diligently as Sanfrecce Hiroshima's No. 1.

His media persona is characterised by considered comments that reflect his aspiration to be a "GK who saves the team." He looked back on the 2024 season with the words "I wish I could have saved the team more," revealing how demanding he is of himself at crucial moments. He has also shared personal routines — listening to B'z's "Ichibus to Zenbu" before matches — as well as hobbies including hot springs, cafés and reading (including nutrition-related books).

info The Challenge to Overcome — Zero Experience at a World Cup Finals

Zero experience at a World Cup finals — that is the single biggest challenge Osako faces. He was not selected for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, withdrew injured before the 2024 Asian Cup, and served only as a reserve at the Tokyo Olympics: he has no competitive experience at a major finals.

On top of that, competing with overseas-based players Schmidt Daniel (Szalaszko) and Zion Suzuki (Parma) for a place in the national team squad means that his lack of experience abroad could prove a weakness when it comes to making his case. Nevertheless, his track record — the EAFF E-1 Championship 2025 Best Goalkeeper award, the J1 Best Eleven selection, and the evolution into a "GK who helps win titles" demonstrated by playing every minute of every match in 2024 — is unambiguous. The Kirin Challenge Cup match against Iceland on 31 May, and then the pre-tournament training camp, represent his final mission: convincing manager Moriyasu that he is a "GK ready to deliver when it matters."
