Breda Castle — Symbol of the City
Breda's most iconic landmark is Breda Castle (Kasteel van Breda). Today it serves as the Royal Netherlands Military Academy (KMA), and William I, the father of the Dutch nation, once lived within its walls.
Grote Kerk
The tower of the Grote Kerk (Great Church) rises at the heart of the city, defining Breda's skyline. The surrounding square is lined with cafés and restaurants, giving off the relaxed, quintessentially Dutch atmosphere the city is known for.
NAC Breda — A Football City
Breda is home to professional football club NAC Breda. Van Dijk spent his early childhood in Breda, but his youth career took him north to Groningen. His professional journey began in Groningen rather than Breda, yet his birthplace remains the root of who he is.
Breda is sometimes called the "southern gateway to the Netherlands" — a multicultural city where Belgian and French influences blend with Dutch culture. The fact that van Dijk, who has Surinamese heritage, grew up in this diverse city may well be the origin of his open character and international outlook.

sports_soccer Football Journey — A Club Career in Full
FC Groningen (2010–2013)
Born in Breda, van Dijk launched his professional career in the northern city of Groningen. Spotted from the amateur leagues, he made his professional debut in the Eerste Divisie (Dutch top flight). At the time he was deployed not only as a CB but also in midfield, and his passing ability stood out even then.
Celtic FC (2013–2015)
He moved to the Scottish giants for around £2.6 million. At Celtic he won the Scottish Premiership twice and was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. In front of Glasgow's passionate support, he established his reputation as a player who could cut it at a big club.
Southampton FC (2015–2018)
The step up to the Premier League. He joined for £13 million and made an immediate impression in England's top division. His aerial dominance, long-range passing in build-up play, and strength in one-on-one defending attracted the attention of major clubs across Europe.
Liverpool (2018–present)
In January 2018, van Dijk joined Liverpool for £75 million — a world-record fee for a defender at the time. He transformed the team's defence from the moment he arrived, an impact so profound it became known as the "Van Dijk effect."
In his first full season, 2018–19, he won the UEFA Champions League. The following campaign he helped deliver Liverpool's first Premier League title, ending the club's 30-year wait for the championship. His 2nd-place finish in the 2019 Ballon d'Or — just 7 points behind Messi — was a remarkable achievement for a defender.
In October 2020, during the Merseyside Derby against Everton, he suffered a ruptured ACL in his right knee. After approximately ten months on the sidelines he returned in August 2021. The mental strength he showed in fighting through the fear that his career might be over, before completing a full recovery, is worthy of the highest praise.
In April 2025 he agreed a contract extension through 2027. A reported salary of around £400,000 per week — among the highest for any defender in Europe — speaks to the enormous trust Liverpool place in him.
Close Teammates
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Van Dijk has described Alexander-Arnold as his "best partner" at the heart of the Liverpool defence. He has spoken about how much the message Arnold sent him when he was recovering from his ACL injury meant to him.
Alisson Becker (Liverpool)
The understanding between van Dijk and goalkeeper Becker is the cornerstone of Liverpool's defence. The two are said to communicate more than any other pairing within the squad during matches.

His 72+ appearances as captain for the Netherlands surpassed the all-time record previously held by Frank de Boer. With his 35th birthday approaching by the time the tournament kicks off, this is widely expected to be his final major international tournament. After qualifying was confirmed in November 2025, he gave an emotional speech in the dressing room — strongly suggesting that WC 2026 will be his farewell.

info Editor's Note
Behind the title of "world's best centre-back," Virgil van Dijk has walked a road that was anything but smooth. Growing up in Breda's multicultural environment, knocking on the professional door in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands, and progressing step by step through Scotland and England — every stage of that journey brought him to where he stands today.
The ACL rupture in 2020 was the greatest test of his career. Yet he did not break. The sight of him grinding through rehabilitation, returning to the pitch, and continuing to perform at the very highest level is the very definition of strength.
WC 2026 looms at 34. It is very likely to be the crowning chapter of his time in orange. Football fans around the world will be watching Virgil van Dijk on what may be his final stage — a stage that begins with a first-round clash against Japan.
