[Analysis] Japan 1-0 Iceland ― Left-Side Overload and Defensive Concerns Behind the Win, Plus Two Substitutes Who Shone

In the Kirin Challenge Cup 2026, Japan defeated Iceland 1-0 thanks to Koga Ogawa's winning goal in the 87th minute. From a breakdown of the scoring moment to the team's left-heavy attack, defensive vulnerabilities, and the substitutes who made an impact, this is an honest fan's perspective looking ahead to the World Cup.

I wholeheartedly support the Japan national team and their success at the World Cup. With that as my premise, I want to share my honest thoughts after watching yesterday's match against Iceland. This is purely the personal opinion of one supporter.

With the match still locked at 0-0 deep into the second half, substitute Sugawara Yukinari delivered a precise cross from the right flank in the 87th minute. Fellow substitute Ogawa Koki made a clever run between two defenders and, leaning his body to meet the ball, headed it into the net for the winning goal. The two substitutes combined to break the deadlock in a stalemate of a match, and Japan wrapped up the send-off game with a victory.

star Some Frank Observations

As I mentioned at the outset, I believe in the Japan national team and support them wholeheartedly. With that said, I want to honestly share a few concerns heading into WC 2026.

Left-Heavy Attack and an Isolated Ito Junya on the Right

First, the left side. Nakamura Keito made repeated overlapping runs, which heavily skewed the team's attacking balance to the left. As a result, Ito Junya on the right seemed increasingly isolated and was largely unable to show his true qualities. This is a clear issue — if the attacking combination stays as it is come the actual World Cup, I don't see any goals coming from that side.

Positioning of Doan Ritsu and Kubo Takefusa

Doan Ritsu also looked uncomfortable throughout. If Kubo Takefusa had been positioned a little more centrally, the space that opened up on the right could have given Doan more freedom. I think the stagnation on the right flank could have been resolved simply by adjusting the front line's positioning.

How to Use Ito Junya (My Personal Take)

On a side note, I'm a big fan of Ito Junya. His pace and his willingness to shoot decisively leave a great impression. That said, his strengths are maximized on the wing. He started and played the full match this time, but I actually feel that his blistering speed would be a far more genuine threat to tired defenders if deployed as a second-half substitute.

The Biggest Concern: The Defense

And the biggest concern, in my view, is the defensive line.

To be honest, I found myself puzzled by the decision to start Yoshida Maya. On top of that, the substitution ceremony carried out while the game was still in progress (at the 13th minute) left me with a sense of unease I couldn't shake. It felt almost like a legendary club player being given a farewell send-off in his final retirement match — and as one supporter, I'll be honest: it was a little off-putting. I say this with full respect for his years of service.

info This substitution had been announced in advance by head coach Moriyasu Hajime, and players from both teams formed a guard of honour to see Yoshida Maya off (Source: Football Channel). Given his age, this is widely considered to have likely been his final appearance for the national team.

Back to the matter at hand. With a 3-back formation in place, Tomiyasu Takehiro's strengths cannot be fully utilised. And in the centre, Itakura Ko — he was entirely focused on safe, risk-free play, showing no intent to turn and move forward with the ball. Given that Iceland's pressing was not particularly intense, he should have been able to carry the ball forward-facing far more than he would in the actual World Cup. The overall impression was one of rustiness — neither the passing speed nor the spacing between defenders felt right.

GK Suzuki Zion Was Focused

On the other hand, goalkeeper Suzuki Zion moved with real focus and concentration. I believe he will catch the eye of scouts at WC 2026, and that a move to a big club will follow next season.

Sano Gakuto and Taniguchi Shogo Impressed as Substitutes

The substitutes who truly stood out were Sano Gakuto and Taniguchi Shogo — they were outstanding. In their play, I caught a glimpse of a team capable of winning the World Cup. Even in limited minutes, they left a clear and convincing impression that they can be relied upon when it counts.

A Word of Concern for Ogawa Koki

On the other hand, Ogawa Koki left something to be desired. He was of course the hero who scored the winner and led Japan to victory. However, his pressing in the front line and his positioning relative to the midfielders were underwhelming, and he still leaves some concerns should he feature at the World Cup. I also get the sense that nobody is pointing this out to him. Among professionals, there are things that are hard to say to a teammate's face — which is precisely why I think the coaching staff should make sure this message gets through to him.

Summary

Time is running short before WC 2026. The victory itself is wonderful, but there is genuine room for improvement in how it was achieved. If SAMURAI BLUE can face their challenges head-on and correct them one by one, they can become an even stronger side. I believe in that potential, and I will keep cheering them on.
